Notes from the Video: Mark Fisher: Capitalist Realism and Business Ontology (Linked below).

The idea that late stage capitalism and a post-Fordist economy requires the oversight of the production of the public sector is represented in our school district. The district and department of education have cracked down on school requirements for student "seat time." The idea that lengthening seat time will result in better student performance does not seem to have proven true under the current system of classroom regulation. The standardization of the curriculum prevents teachers from expressing creativity in their teaching or catering their instruction to the needs of their students. This year, our school has reduced advisory and common lunch time. This gives students less time to interact with their teachers and their peers. Human connection is one of the leading factors in wellbeing, thus cutting this time from the schedule has the effect of diminishing students’ sense of belonging, arguably a greater detrimental effect to the quality of their education than the benefit of increased seat time.
